Ovi Share is shutting down
by subacati
Is this the final nail in the Nokia coffin? …
Nokia's Ovi services provided mobile users with all the functions that a desktop user took for granted.
Now they are shutting down Ovi share. (wasn't that shut down already? )
Here is the email they sent me.
Dear Ovi Share user – You are receiving this email
because you have previously
used the Ovi Share service. Ovi
Share is an online service that
enables Nokia users to upload
and share files, typically photos and videos. As of 30 May 2012, we will be
discontinuing the Ovi Share
service. If you have files stored
using Ovi Share, please click here for detailed download instructions. If you already
have another copy of your files
existing on your computer or
another sharing service, you do
not need to do anything. You will continue to have
access to Ovi Share until 30
May 2012; however you will
not be able to upload new files
after 13 March 2012. Why are we making this
change? The Ovi Share shutdown is part
of Nokia's revised services
mission to focus on mobile and
location based services. As a
result, the Ovi Share service
will be closing. However, you will still be able to use your Ovi
Share username and password
to access other Nokia services.
We encourage you to use one
of the many online photo-
sharing services as a way to store and share your photos
and videos moving forward. What does this mean for you
as an Ovi Share user? If you do not have a copy of
your files any other place other
than Ovi Share, you will need
to download those files before
30 May 2012. To download
your files to your computer, please click here for detailed instructions. After 30 May
2012, your files will not be
accessible from the Ovi Share
service and will be deleted. If
you already have another copy
of your files existing on your computer or another sharing
service, you do not need to do
anything. If you have any further
questions about this service
change or need help
downloading your files, please
contact Nokia Care by going to http://nokia.com/support and then selecting “Contact
Support.” Nokia apologizes for this
inconvenience, and we thank
you for using Ovi Share. Sincerely,
Nokia
The real bitch is that I've got thousands of files on there from older posts. I'm going to have to download each and every one over my currently South African web connection, and then reupload them to the new service I've been using for a while now. As I couldn't tell you what image is what, I'll have to wait for comments on old posts and do the image that matches then. :awww:
They told me last year that the service would be kept running and I wouldn't have to worry about moving files, they simply wouldn't be updating it.I've been moving over to Picasa for a few months now anyway, but still have three years worth of post images to download.
I'm a bit annoyed about this. But, it was free after all at and least we got a warning.

They should have provided an export option! :awww:
I had a similar problem a few years ago, when I was Flamingo Rinse, storing my music files with online free storage. I went through 5 or 6 different online storage solutions until I found one that was stable. It wasn't until I paid up and bought 100Gb for something like $100NZ per year that it got safe (and backed up), and became a trustworthy service. So all the songs & stuff – pics etc. – that I use in my blogs, I pay to store and share on MyOtherDrive and I don't hesitate to recommend them as being as good as any out there, and better than most – I've also experienced excellent tech support from them, and even excellent support from their accounts people, when paypal screwed up. Personal experience, for what it's worth, and credit where credit is due.
It is hard to complain when it was a free service. And is this the final nail in Nokia's coffin? Things do seem to be going toes up for them :rip:
They either have some deep and unfathomable plan that mere mortals cannot comprehend or they're out to make the most stupid decisions ever my a Multinational! 🙄 .:sst: . I wonder if there is a prize for that award? :sherlock: .

They're redesigning their business. So many of the Ovi services were experiments and they're taking the technology formed by those experiments and combining it with Microsoft's own for better Windows Phone capabilities.
Cloud ANYTHING makes me nervous. The handful amount of images and audio files that I use in my Blog are stored in my MyOpera Files. And I certainly don't use MyOpera or any other Storage Service as my main storage for any of my Files, images or what have you. I have all of that in my computer, Flash Drives and CDs.I've seen the Ads for that new Microsoft Office 365, which from what I gather is supposed to be a Cloud-based Microsoft Office Suite. Ummm, NnnnNO. That's not exactly making me drool. I don't want to have to depend on the Internet for having a functional Office Suite. For example, in recent times, my youngest sister and her husband switched from a Cable package of TV, Internet and Phone to a DirecTV-based one. The TV part of that package was immediately installed. But, for whatever reason, the Internet and phone part of that package has taken about a month or longer. If they had had that Cloud-based Office 365, not only would they have been Internetless, but also Office Suiteless.
Speaking of shutting down, Aadil, have you already set that Disable Comments Setting on your Blog? You know … as per that DevBlog Post:http://my.opera.com/devblog/blog/2012/03/07/new-setting-for-disabling-comments-on-blog-postsMany people are encountering this problem of suddenly their New Comment Boxes don't exist or some variation of not being able to comment in Blogs. And they're not aware of the change the MyOpera Devs had implemented. Heck, I wasn't even aware until yesterday of the initial change they mention having made.
There should have been better communication by the Devs regarding this experiment. I'm sure that as I type this, there are still people confused and / or freaking out as to why the comments on their Blogs and other people's Blogs are out of whack.
So that's what happened. .The default sound reasonable to me. .
Agreed! 🙄 .
trying to download everything seems to be a no-go.Anyone got any suggestions cause downloading this stuff individually is a pain. :ko:

A computer and a script is about the only way to reduce the tedium of downloading individually. :awww: .It may be possible to run a command line script from an Android phone but I don't think there is any way to do the equivalent from a Symbian phone. :sherlock: .Even with a script, you would need to type up a list of file names, etc. to get everything automatically. Unless you can write an above average A.I. routine. (perhaps in Python? :left: )

Way too many; I've been using it since mid-2007 for my images. I'll be moving over to Google's Picasa which is also part of their Google+ service so that should be around for quite a while yet. I've been using them for a while anyway just in case the fact that the service wasn't being developed any further meant it suddenly became unusable, but haven't gotten around to downloading yet.
wow… I was lucky enough to get all the important bits i stored there.I need other sunshage places i think but it seems the recent sites keep closing or they lose my shit somehow. :irked:
Finally finished downloading my images. There are thousands. I'm slowly pulling out all the ones in the Editorials I post and I'll redo those. The rest can go without.
shit. Forgot about that. Fuggit.
